We're excited to share that VGS is now included in Stripe Forwarding documentation, making it even easier for Stripe customers to securely share payment method data with VGS and unlock the full power of payment portability.
For businesses that already have Stripe payment methods on file, this is a major step forward: you can now use Stripe Forward API to route those underlying payment details to VGS, where they can be securely vaulted, tokenized, and used across your broader payments ecosystem.
Customers who currently have Stripe payment methods on file
Many businesses today store customer payment methods in Stripe, enabling fast onboarding, seamless checkout, and recurring payments. But as teams scale, they often need more flexibility in how they manage and use that stored payment data across their broader payments ecosystem.
Stripe Forward API allows customers to share the underlying payment data with VGS
Stripe Forwarding enables customers to securely share underlying payment method data through the Stripe Forward API. With VGS now documented as a supported destination, Stripe customers have a clear integration path to forward payment details into the VGS platform.
This unlocks a more modern architecture that centralizes payment method handling through VGS while keeping collection flows intact. Instead of forcing card re-entry, Stripe Forwarding provides a secure mechanism to transfer payment method data so it can be vaulted and controlled through VGS.
Once VGS has the card data, customers unlock tokenization and broader portability
Once VGS receives the card data, customers can immediately enable additional payment primitives and workflows, including:
- Network tokenization: direct access to network tokens and token lifecycle management, improving authorization performance and reducing exposure to raw PAN data.
- Account Updater (AU): automatic refresh of updated card credentials to reduce churn from expired or reissued cards.
- Secure third-party sharing: the ability to share card details (or derived tokens) with approved third parties and payment providers, including additional processors like Adyen and Braintree.
In practice, this enables teams to build portable, flexible payment infrastructure. This also enables processor expansion, routing strategies, and broader payment ecosystem support without reworking customer payment collection.
Conclusion
Stripe Forwarding enables customers to move beyond a single-provider storage model by securely forwarding stored payment method data to VGS. With VGS now featured in Stripe's Forwarding documentation, Stripe customers have a more direct path to adopt tokenization, improve billing durability, and operationalize payment methods across multiple processors and third-party systems.
